Who are we in the eyes of the social media's algorithms?
All the digital traces we leave while surfing the Internet are collected by search engines and applications. Based on this information, our data is stored and transformed into a profile that corresponds to us. In order for businesses to make money, algorithms determine what we see, creating "filter bubbles". They pick for us curated content in order to keep their grip. Algorithms know us better than we know ourselves, as they shape our digital DNA. This digital identity is created by rankings, putting us in categories.
Digital DNA explores this identity that evolves in spite of us, by observing how the algorithms of social networks categorize us. Through an interactive experience accompanied by a projection, I propose a visualization of Instagram posts that the Instagram algorithm perceives as being "for me". By analyzing these contents during several months, I noticed a certain recurrence of the same contents: graphic design, tattoos, interior design, fashion, etc. The viewer is invited to explore the digitized genomes and gradually discover the recurring images and themes that were proposed to me by the algorithms.
